3 Steps to Re-Energise Your Life
3 Steps to Re-energise your Life
Thomas Leonard inspired me to write this post. He came up with the concept of ‘tolerations’. According to Thomas, in his book “The Portable Coach”, tolerations are ‘things that bug us, sap our energy, and could be eliminated’.
1- What are you tolerating in your life?
In other words, what’s making you suffer?
Make a list of everything you can think of.
For example:
- Waiting on the queue of the mobile-shop when you camp
- People asking you to do things all the time
- A garage full of clutter
Or, as I experienced recently, a neighbour that insists on feeding the neighbourhood cats by throwing bits of raw chicken and bacon out of his kitchen window while he cooks.
2- Identify the benefits
Take one item at a time, and ask yourself:
- How are you benefiting from allowing this to be part of your life?
- Is that benefit substantial? Is it about avoiding standing up for yourself? Or is it just something you’ve grown used to?
- How else can you get the same benefit?
- What is it costing you not to do anything?
3- Reduce / eliminate
Come up with ways to reduce the impact of each ‘toleration’ or remove it from your life entirely..
Then put a system in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
For example, this may involve household rules about who takes care of what. And making sure the garage is NOT your territory.
In other words, change what needs to be changed, adjust what needs to be adjusted, or… simply accept it.
3- Accept
Choose what you’d like to accept, and not change right now. Maybe you still don’t like it, but you may have no other choice at the moment, and if you make a positive decision to live with it, it will make life much easier.
Because you have made a choice rather than having it imposed on you, you won’t waste as much energy being upset. In fact, you may even feel energised by the fact that you have taken control and made a decision.
If you have decided to accept something, it’s your own choice, so it’s no longer a ‘toleration’.
You can do this on your own or you can get some life coaching to help you. Either way, you’ll be re-energised when you take control of what you tolerate.
